What Makes the Roots Grow Deep

I had never woken with such pain before.

The alarm jolted me from a deep sleep, yet my attempt to throw myself out of bed fell flat.

My mind raced as I tried to remember why I had set the alarm. As the grogginess wore off, the true nature of my alarm rang clear—it wasn’t the sound of a beep but rather the faint cry of my newborn baby.

I willed my body to sit up and gather him into my arms.

Skin to skin. Heart to heart.

Our eyes met, and in that moment my heart discovered a new kind of ache—the kind that comes from a love only a mother knows.

It was there, at the tender age of sixteen, alone in my hospital bed, from a broken and lonely place, that I made a quiet vow:

To become the best mother I could be. To never stop learning. To uncover the secret of motherhood. To somehow thrive in my womanhood.

June marks 35 years since that defining moment in my life.

In those years, I have read the books, taken the classes, sought out mentors, studied scripture, and lived out motherhood day by day.

And through all of it, one truth has risen above the rest.

One principle that has shaped everything.

The greatest impact we can have in our womanhood is becoming deeply rooted in Christ.

After decades of marriage, motherhood, and walking with other women, I have come to see this not just as a helpful idea—but as the foundation.

Because when our roots grow deep, everything else finds its place.

Jeremiah 17:7-8 says:

“Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord… They will be like a tree planted by the water… It does not fear when heat comes… it never fails to bear fruit.”

Ephesians 3:16-19 says:

“…that you, being rooted and established in love… may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”

God desires to strengthen us with His power to the very core of our being.

The inner places.

The places where the enemy has whispered lies about our worth, our beauty, and our influence.

And yet, God is doing something deeper.

He is rooting us. Establishing us. Filling us with His love.

So that even in seasons of heat, dryness, or uncertainty—we remain steady.

And from that place, we begin to overflow.

There have been many seasons in my life where I didn’t know the right way.

I felt overwhelmed. Burdened. Afraid I would get it wrong.

Afraid my children might never come to know the goodness of God.

I was living as if everything depended on me.

But the truth is, my world was upside down.

Because God never asked me to carry that weight.

He came to make things right.

To steady my heart. To renew my thinking.

To remind me that my primary calling was not to strive—but to remain rooted in Him.

He is the faithful one.

He is the one who does the rooting. The establishing. The growing.

After all, I am just His little sparrow.

Over time, I came to understand something I now say often:

We teach what we know, but we reproduce who we are.

And oh, how this shaped my life—and the lives of those in my care.

In my previous post, I shared that the Sparrow Way is about cultivating rooted hearts, tending peaceful homes, and overflowing in everyday worship.

But it all begins here.

With roots.

My prayer is that this space will be a place where we learn, slowly and faithfully, what is means to be rooted in Christ.

Together.

As His little sparrows.

We’re learning this together, one small step at a time.

And I’m so glad you’re here.

You were never meant to walk this journey alone. If you find yourself needing encouragement or guidance in this season, Sparrow Sessions is a gentle place to be supported.
